Proton-coupled chloride transporter, member of the ClC family of chloride ion channels and ion transporters. Important for normal acidification of the endosome lumen. May play an important role in renal tubular function.

ClC-5 is increased in osteosarcoma and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) tissues. Knockdown of ClC-5 significantly inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in osteosarcoma and CCA cells [1,2].
